Breast Reduction (Reduction Mammaplasty): Comfort and Balance

For women with excessively large breasts (macromastia), the issue extends far beyond aesthetics. Large, heavy breasts can lead to chronic physical discomfort, limitations in activity, and emotional distress.

At The Plastics Atelier in Omaha, we specialize in Breast Reduction surgery (Reduction Mammaplasty), a procedure designed to remove excess fat, glandular tissue, and skin to achieve a breast size that is proportionate to your body frame. Our goal is to alleviate physical symptoms while creating a beautiful, lifted, and balanced contour.

Relief from Physical Symptoms

Breast reduction is often considered a medically necessary procedure due to the profound relief it provides from symptoms caused by the weight of the breasts. Patients frequently report significant improvement or elimination of:

  • Chronic Back, Neck, and Shoulder Pain: This is often the primary motivator for surgery.

  • Deep Bra Strap Grooves: Indentations that form in the shoulders due to the weight of the bra straps.

  • Skin Irritation/Rashes: Rashes, irritation, or chronic infection occurring in the fold beneath the breasts (inframammary fold).

  • Limited Physical Activity: Difficulty exercising, participating in sports, or finding comfortable clothing.

  • Postural Problems: Stooping or poor posture adopted to compensate for the weight.

The Breast Reduction Procedure

Breast reduction is a complex procedure that simultaneously reduces volume, lifts the breast mound, and resizes and repositions the nipple-areola complex (NAC) to a more youthful height.

The technique used is customized based on the amount of tissue being removed and the desired final shape. Dr. Hall will discuss the best incision pattern for you during your consultation:

Common Incision Patterns:

  1. Inverted-T / Anchor Pattern: This is the most common and versatile technique, used for moderate to large reductions. It involves an incision around the areola, a vertical incision down to the crease, and a horizontal incision along the breast crease (inframammary fold).

  2. Lollipop / Vertical Pattern: Used for patients requiring a moderate reduction. It involves an incision around the areola and a vertical incision only, which can result in less scarring on the underside of the breast.

During the procedure, excess tissue (skin, fat, and glandular tissue) is removed, and the remaining breast tissue is reshaped and lifted. The nipple and areola are brought up to a higher, more aesthetically pleasing position.

What to Expect in Recovery

  • Immediate Relief: Many patients feel an immediate difference in the weight carried on their chest.

  • Downtime: Most patients require 1 to 2 weeks off work for initial recovery.

  • Activity: Strenuous activity, heavy lifting, and intense exercise are restricted for 6 weeks.

  • Scarring: Scars are permanent but are strategically placed and will fade significantly over the course of 1-2 years, often becoming very faint.
