Gynecomastia Correction: Achieving a Defined, Masculine Chest

Gynecomastia is a common condition resulting from the enlargement of the male breast tissue. This condition can affect men of any age, causing the chest to appear feminine, often leading to self-consciousness, discomfort, and avoidance of certain clothing or activities.

At The Plastics Atelier in Omaha, we specialize in Gynecomastia Correction surgery. Dr. Hall focuses on precisely removing the excess glandular tissue and fat to sculpt a flat, firm, and naturally contoured male chest.

Understanding the Cause

Gynecomastia is typically caused by a hormonal imbalance (an increase in estrogen relative to testosterone) that stimulates the growth of glandular tissue. While diet and fitness can reduce fat (pseudogynecomastia), true gynecomastia involving firm glandular tissue often requires surgical intervention for complete correction.

We treat all degrees of gynecomastia, with a focus on achieving a permanent and discreet solution.

The Gynecomastia Correction Procedure

The approach to correcting gynecomastia is customized based on the composition of the breast enlargement—whether it is predominantly glandular tissue, fat, or a combination of both.

1. Liposuction (For Fatty Component)

If the chest enlargement is primarily composed of fat (pseudogynecomastia), the condition can often be corrected solely with liposuction.

  • Small, discreet incisions are made in the skin folds of the chest.

  • A thin cannula is inserted to gently suction out the excess fat, sculpting the chest contour.

2. Glandular Excision (For Glandular Tissue)

If firm glandular tissue is present, it must be surgically removed.

  • An incision is strategically placed on the border of the nipple-areola complex (NAC), often along the lower edge (known as a periareolar incision).

  • The excess firm glandular tissue is precisely excised and removed.

3. Combined Approach and Skin Tightening

Most patients require a combination of both liposuction (to remove fat and contour the surrounding areas) and excision (to remove the firm core of glandular tissue).

  • Skin Redundancy: For cases involving significant weight loss or severe, long-standing gynecomastia (Grade III or IV) where there is excess, sagging skin, additional techniques may be needed, such as skin excision or repositioning of the nipple-areola complex, to ensure a smooth and natural result.

What to Expect After Surgery

Gynecomastia correction is performed as an outpatient procedure.

  • Compression Garment: Patients wear a specialized compression vest for 4-6 weeks. This garment is essential for minimizing swelling, helping the skin redrape smoothly, and ensuring the final contour is well defined.

  • Downtime: Most patients return to desk work and light activities within 3 to 7 days.

  • Exercise: Strenuous activity and chest exercises are typically restricted until 4 to 6 weeks after surgery.

  • Scarring: Scars are strategically placed (often concealed by the areola) and will fade over time.
