Why Consider a Lip Lift?

As we age, the philtrum (the space between the base of the nose and the top of the upper lip) naturally lengthens. This elongation can cause the upper lip to turn inward, thin out, and cover the upper teeth, even when smiling.

A lip lift is designed to address:

  • A Long Philtrum: Shortening the distance to create a more youthful facial "lower third."

  • Lack of Tooth Show: Restoring the subtle "incisal show" (visible upper teeth) that is a hallmark of a youthful expression.

The Technique: The Subnasal Bullhorn Lift

Dr. Hall utilizes the Subnasal Bullhorn technique, widely considered the gold standard for lip lifting.

  1. The Incision: A meticulously placed incision is made directly beneath the base of the nose, following the natural curves of the nostrils and columella.

  2. The Lift: A small, precisely measured "bullhorn-shaped" strip of skin is removed.

  3. The Suspension: Dr. Hall secures the deeper tissues to ensure the lift is supported by the underlying structure, not just the skin. This prevents the "pulled" look and ensures there is minimal tension to facilitate healing.

  4. The Closure: Using ultra-fine sutures, the incision is closed in layers to minimize tension, allowing the scar to fade into the natural shadows at the base of the nose.

Recovery and Results

  • The Procedure: Typically performed under local anesthesia in our Omaha facility. It usually takes approximately 45 to 60 minutes.

  • Initial Healing: Swelling is most significant in the first 3 to 5 days.

  • Suture Removal: Stitches are typically removed at the 1-week mark.

  • The Scar: While the incision is external, its placement in the natural crease of the nose makes it more discreet. With proper post-operative care, it typically matures well over time.

  • Return to Routine: Most patients return to work and social activities within 7 to 10 days.
